Providing Health Literacy to the Nashville African American Community

Did you know about 40% of the African American community have limited reading skills? Because of this, many African Americans have a hard time understanding the basics and complexities of the healthcare system. Studies have shown that individuals who do struggle with health literacy have a hard time making appropriate health decisions, understanding insurance options, communicating with their healthcare providers, or even understanding prescriptions. Our focus at CHEN is to help these individuals with their health disparities and give them what they need to achieve health literacy.

CHEN is a faith-based, non-profit organization that partners with local Nashville congregations to help provide the tools and resources your community needs to improve their health literacy.

How Can CHEN Help Improve Your Congregations Health Literacy

By partnering with CHEN, we will create a communications plan that includes sharing healthcare information during Sunday & Wednesday Services, within local bulletins, through social media networks, emails, and text campaigns. In addition, if there are specific individuals from your congregation who need help, our CHEN health navigator and liaison will work directly with them to receive primary care, specialty care, or other services in need.

  • EPICC Project – This grant-funded project between CHEN, TSU, Meharry, and Vanderbilt helps increase a church’s capacity to identify and utilize evidence-based health programs relevant to the needs of their congregants. To learn more about this project and how to participate, click HERE
